About Medallion: Four Stories Of The Golden Curse

The Medallion and Reina Tigre’s concern about oceanic over-fishing plays out in real time across the globe. Accelerating depletion of fish and destruction of marine ecosystems in the world’s seas is no fiction, as noted by Dr. Daniel Pauly, professor of fisheries biology and principal investigator of the University of British Columbia’s Sea Around Us Project. Talking on a recent podcast hosted by Yale Law School’s Law, Ethics & Animals (LEAP) Program, Dr. Pauly, who did his doctorate work at the University of Kiel in Kiel Germany, asserted that when fish populations collapse, catches are under-reported, science is ignored and the environment is blamed. Dr. Pauly says the real culprit is high seas fishing and government subsidies of international fishing fleets, both of which he says should end…before fish ultimately do.
